SUPER Easy DIY Deep Condition for Type 3 Curly Hair
If you're new (or not!) to Terrestrial Organics, I'm sure you've noticed my complete LOVE for organic, natural products as opposed to those commonly found in the supermarket. I also completely LOVE using products that stay true to my budget. Truth be told, I'm also a fanatic for anything and everything DIY. I love the freedom, the trial and error, and being able to learn more about my body and what it needs. So, I've decided in addition to carefully crafting your favorite beauty staples, I'll also be sharing my favorite DIY beauty secrets to clear skin and healthy, happy hair!
As an inaugural post, I'll be sharing one of my favorite recipes for an easy deep condition, especially for curly hair (and even MORE especially for type 3 curly hair)! If you aren't sure what curly hair type you are, a quick google search will turn up dozens of articles and quizzes to help you determine yours. As a reference, I have type 3a curly hair.
Lately, I've been seeing a lot of the "Curly Girl Method" in the organic-sphere, and while I already follow most of the routine, there are additional steps I've decided to try out. If you don't know what that is, it's basically a method to achieving beautiful, moisturized, curly hair without the use of styling tools, silicone, sulfates, or parabens. A quick Google search will also tell you everything you need to know about it (though I really enjoy the Holistic Enchilada's blog post about it, and free ebook, that can be found here). Where I've been falling flat is the use of the correct styling products, the drying method (like plopping, my new favorite thing!), and using the LOC (leave-in conditioner, oil, and curling creme) method. So, for the next few weeks I'll be following a strict protocol and keep you updated along the way!
Now to the good stuff. Today I've decided to do a monthly deep condition, and I did NOT feel like going to the store to buy $20 worth of conditioner when I could easily make something moisturizing, protein-packed, and organic at home. All it took was three ingredients you already have in your fridge, a hairband, and a little bit of time!
Easy peasy moisturized hair in no time! I recommend using 100% organic ingredients in this recipe to get the maximum benefits out of it. Also, this recipe made enough to cover my long curly hair that reaches about 5 or 6 inches past my shoulders, and this recipe can easily be scaled up or down depending on your hair length!
So, what makes this super easy conditioner amazingly great? Egg yolks are chock-full of biotin, folate, vitamin A, and vitamin D. Each of these nutrients and vitamins are already a recipe for gorgeous locks. In fact, egg yolk treatments are even recommended for those suffering from hair loss! Basically, egg yolk is the must-have DIY ingredient (in my humble opinion) for every hair mask for luscious, long hair.
I have a confession to make. I absolutely HATE mayonnaise. Even just looking at it makes me gag and there's no way I could ever eat it without a full-on cringe. BUT, mayonnaise is such a wonder-worker on my hair I get over my bizarre phobia of it and mix it right in to my conditioner. Since it's made up of mostly egg yolks and oils, it is a staple in my hair regime. A little mayo makes the conditioner thicker, creamier, and more easy to manage during application while also giving it a protein and moisture boost! Additionally, it's especially useful in taming frizzy, unruly curly hair since it smooths out the hair and leaves it shiny and soft. It's a win-win on all fronts!
The last ingredient I adore to use on my curly hair in pretty much everything I make (like leave-in conditioner, oil treatments, etc.) is organic olive oil. Olive oil is great for anything and everything hair including hair growth, preventing hair loss, treating split ends and dandruff, and so much more. Specifically, olive oil is high in monounsaturated essential fatty acids and vitamin E. Both of these are key in achieving your hair goals, especially if you have dry, brittle, dull hair. It'll soften and moisturize your hair while giving it the nutrient boost it needs to promote growth. This makes it my go-to oil for picture-perfect hair.
Naturally beautiful hair really is as easy as 1, 2, 3! As I continue to explore the ways of my hair, I'll begin to add more ingredients to the mix if I'm feeling feisty that day, but this recipe will always be my go-to, super easy, DIY deep conditioner.
